Although Shield was already able to run the Plex media player app, soon it will also be able to act as a server on your home network too. Plex has today announced that it will offer owners of nVidia's Android-powered Shield box a new way to stream media around their home. High-quality videos, especially 4K and HEVC videos, can stream more smoothly. Videos can start streaming faster and buffer less often. Often, more videos can stream at the same time. The media remote and extra controllers - one is included - also add to the total cost. Hardware-Accelerated Streaming has a number of advantages: 1. Shield starts at $179.99 and goes up to $299 if you want 500GB of storage. It does however give you free access to apps on any platform, along with photo uploads and the option to sync media into the cloud. Plex Pass is a bit expensive too, with lifetime costing $149.88, yearly is $39.99 and monthly is $4.99. For example, the ability to sync video to your phone or tablet requires this. Some features may need you to subscribe to the Plex Pass. The Plex app will be free on Shield - it would usually cost $5 on Android TV. You can stream directly to the Nvidia Shield through multiple antennae. The hardware is strong enough to handle transcoding several different things at once, and additional onboard storage can be added via USB drives and microSD cards. Now it feels like it's becoming a whole new device that can turn your NAS or, simply, a portable hard drive into a whole media library which you can share around your house. The Nvidia Shield TV Pro is one of the most powerful Plex server hardware devices out there. Shield has always been a pretty low-cost way of streaming media as well as playing games on your TV that either come from nVidia's cloud gaming service, or stream from your GeForce-enabled PC. From its end nVidia is also supporting HDR on Netflix and will also be adding YouTube 4K60 playback too - as part of the same update which will bring this Plex support. For those who love films there's more good news because Plex supports 4K video already, and is bringing HDR along too.
